Living Jars
A New Collection of Fine Fermenters
Growing up, my mom always had something fermenting on the counter, whether it was kraut, kimchi, or hot sauce. Having always seen a fermenter resting on the counter, I felt inspired to create a fermenter that could function better than others, while being elegant enough to be a stand alone art piece.
In my recent series of fermenters, Living Jars, I explore the ancient art of fermentation in connection to our daily lives today. By improving traditional design and adding contemporary touches, my fermenters focus on preserving their history while creating an ergonomic object. This series ties together aspects of microbiology, historic practices, and modern aesthetics.
When creating my jars, I use both wheel and handbuilding techniques to give me full control over my design. As an avid fermenter I test my own designs several times, to find and fix flaws, and to guarantee a high quality and functional piece. One thing I love about creating these fermenters, is knowing that they will be used, seen, handled, and cherished by another maker.
